Common UV Filtration Questions

Does UV filtration remove chemicals or heavy metals?
No — UV is specifically for biological contaminants (bacteria, viruses, protozoa). It does not remove chemicals, heavy metals, or minerals. That's why UV is often paired with other filtration stages: a sediment pre-filter catches particles that could shield microorganisms from the UV light, and carbon or RO filtration handles chemicals and dissolved solids.
Is UV-treated water safe to drink?
Yes. UV disinfection is approved by the EPA and used by municipal water plants, hospitals, and food processing facilities worldwide. It's one of the four methods the EPA recognizes for drinking water disinfection, alongside chlorine, chloramine, and ozone.
How often do I need to change the UV lamp?
The UV lamp should be replaced once a year — even if it's still glowing, its UV-C output degrades over time and may no longer provide adequate disinfection. The quartz sleeve should be cleaned during the lamp change. We can set you up on an annual service plan so it's handled automatically.
Does a UV system work during a power outage?
No — the UV lamp requires electricity to operate. During a power outage, water passing through the system is not being treated. We recommend having bottled water on hand for outages, or pairing UV with a backup power solution if uninterrupted treatment is critical.
